Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday is already from the old times a day that is connected with joy and fun , not with jobs. This is probably because of the knowledge that spring is on the way. But the Catholic Church  declares a long Lent. During that time   giving up eating meat was necessary. So before the Lent (that was without entertainment and fun) it was just needed to have some good time.
Shrove Tuesday is an extraordinary chance to make the following year better for yourself.
For that you mustn`t forget three things.
1) Sliding- that forecasts the growth of flax-this means wealth and success.
The old Estonians didn`t go sledging so much, they rode horses. If you rode a long distance with a horse, you got  good and tall flax.
2) Eating the pigs` trotters. Then the pigs were healthy ( and also your stomach was full)
Besides that eating peasoup and Shrove buns  is  traditional. In the old times also barley bread was eaten, which is the  predecessor of the nowadays muffins.
3) And to have easygoing and sorrowless life, rugballs and strawdolls were made and put into the forests.(that also meant a good cattle, better flax and corn that year)
It was an important tradition  to make spinning tops of the bones of pigs. They were made of bones, nowadays of buttons.
Shrove Tuesday was a women`s  day.On that day most of the jobs for Women were forbidden. The only job that was in favor of, was entwining bands. But it was recommended to cut hair and comb them often  to make them shiny and bright.
And the spinsters wereallowed only on that day to go and propose a man to marry her. Just take your chance!
This year Shrove Tuesday is the 21st February.

Making bread

Breadmaking is a very old custom, that has come quite common even nowadays. This is also because our Estonian president`s wife likes to bake and make bread and she has advertised it over tv, so peole today have come closer to their roots and make simpler foods . In many families people make the dough themselves and bake bread.
Our history teacher and also a parent Merja bakes bread herself and she talked about baking bread to the 1st class students and home economics class students. They made the dough all together and everybody could taste it. As the old tradition says, you have to sing during making the dough, then the dough really comes right.
In the end the breads were put into the oven. Everybody could taste a piece of hot bread.
